Honeybee hives were introduced to the property in the late 1990s. Today, the delectable honey produced by the bees is used in the ranch kitchen, sold at the San Francisco Ferry Building store, as well as online.

At McEvoy Ranch, we believe that we should give back to the earth in equal proportion to what we take. That’s why everything, from our olive orchards, to our garden, to the way we eliminate algae from our irrigation ponds is done with the environment in mind.

We are striving to create a self-sufficient ecosystem on the ranch and so we take extra care to research environmentally friendly ways to make this happen. By using sheep instead of mowers to keep undergrowth at bay, we take care of the sheep and the orchards. By planting beneficial cover crops like clover and vetch, we not only reinvigorate the soil with nitrogen and organic matter content, but create an environment for those insects and animals helpful to the ranch.

Most everything consumed on the ranch, with the exception of meat, cheese and milk products, is cultivated on the premises. Menus change with the seasons, and what is not eaten fresh from the harvest is given to the staff, or composted so the nutrients can be returned to the earth. Nothing goes to waste.

Even our production practices are environmentally friendly. Olive oil production has historically created a lot of solid waste. With the help of consultants we have been able to turn this waste into the compost that we use to fertilize the orchards.

Those who suffer from seasonal allergies will be pleased to know that research studies have shown that the consumption of local honey helps alleviate allergy symptoms.
