Behold the Iris

This entry was posted on April 25, 2013 by McEvoy Ranch.

Our annual flush of bearded iris began last week! One of the oldest of cultivated flowers, the Iris is the floral herald of spring: the bearer of good tidings and warm wishes. In classical mythology, Iris was the goddess of the rainbow and the link between heaven and Earth. Iris flourish throughout the world in hundreds of varieties; at the ranch, we especially love bearded iris (I. germanica). In shades of purple, white magenta, yellow and pink, the showy, tissue-like petals of these regal stems speckle our landscape in striking contrast to our rolling hills of green. Our bearded Iris are available by the stem Tuesday and Friday afternoons in our SF Ferry Building shop. Treat yourself or your mum to a few stems while they're in season! -Margaret Koski-Kent, Head Gardener + Winemaker
