The Big (green) Apple

Our 80 Acres team is packing up their body care products, samples and olive sprigs and heading to New York tomorrow. The 2010 New York International Gift Fair begins Saturday, marking the debut of the fair's new sustainability intitiative. "Degrees of Sustainability" is the first comprehensive environmental criteria, ranking and recognition system of green products in the gift and home industry. This ground-breaking new framework will recognize environmentally friendly and socially responsible products and production methods in a three-tiered ranking system from lowest to highest.
• SustainAbility1 – products which are manufactured or constructed with only recycled, recyclable and/or sustainable materials; and with “zero tolerance” for VOC; lead (for baby, children and food-related products); aniline dyes, formaldehyde and chlorine (for textiles); and PVC, without recommendation for use and disposal. • SustainAbility2 – products meeting above criteria, plus use of environmentally-friendly production processes, such as renewable or alternative sources of energy in production, including wind, sun, and alternative fuels. • SustainAbility3 – products meeting above criteria, plus adherence to socially-responsible business practices and/or Fair Trade products made by indigenous peoples which create viable, sustainable trades and markets in poverty-stricken and needy communities worldwide, and donation of percentages of sales to not-for-profit organizations.
And guess who's leading the pack? Out of the 220 exhibitors that meet Sustainability level 1, 80 Acres is one of only seven to meet Sustainability level 3! And why? Our 80 Acres body care line is produced in small batches, using organic ingredients including our estate-grown and produced, USDA-certified organic extra virgin olive oil, jojoba oil, beeswax and essential oils of lavender, ylang ylang, lemon and lime. Recycled packaging is used wherever possible, and our ranch in Petaluma operates an on-site wind turbine that is designed to meet 100% of our energy needs. ...just a few reasons why we call our signature scent "Verde."
