McEvoy Ranch Apple Butter on Toast

Apple Butter - so evocative and yet so completely simple. McEvoy’s apple butter is crafted from Granny Smith apples - a cultivar from Australia - and Sonoma’s own beloved Gravenstein apples - both are grown on the ranch.

The Gravenstein apple is thought to have been first planted at Fort Ross in the early 19th century by Russian fur traders. During the first half of the 20th century, the Gravenstein was the major apple cultivar grown in Sonoma County, California. In 2005 Slow Food USA declared the Gravenstein a heritage food and included it in their Ark of Taste. It speaks to McEvoy’s commitment to sustainability that the Gravenstein is ranch grown. Utilizing this heirloom apple to produce this yummy butter ensures that it will be around a long time for us to enjoy.

The flavor of the apple butter speaks of a light hand - it is clean in taste and has a beautiful dusky rose color. It tastes like apples with a very delicate touch of spice.

Enjoying this delicious butter on toast, oatmeal or pancakes is an easy fit. It's especially good on buckwheat pancakes! Try it with a yogurt parfait filled with layers of toasted hazelnuts, granola - yum!

Grill a roasted turkey panini with our neighbor Marin French Cheese Company’s traditional brie, McEvoy apple butter and fresh arugula for a peppery bite. Fill a crepe with good ham, Estero Gold cheese from local Valley Ford Cheese Company and finish the flavors with the sweet and tart addition of McEvoy Ranch Apple Butter.

RECIPE: Apple Butter Brown Sugar Bars with Pecans

Makes approximately 3 dozen

Ingredients:

¾ cups butter (1-½ stick) softened

½ cup brown sugar

1 large egg

1-½ teaspoon vanilla

2 cups all-purpose flour

¾ cup McEvoy apple butter

1 cup pecans, roasted and roughly chopped

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 F.

Butter a 13” x 9” pan - line with foil or parchment.

Butter foil or parchment.

Beat butter, brown sugar and salt until creamy.

Beat in egg and vanilla.

On low speed, add in flour until just combined.

Transfer mixture to prepared pan and spread evenly.

Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown on edges.

After baking, while bars are still warm, spread with apple butter.

Top with toasted pecans.

Cool completely on wire rack.

Cut into 1-inch squares & enjoy!
