At McEvoy Ranch, we revel in celebrating different cultures and traditions. Nion McEvoy travels extensively and often brings unique art back to the Ranch or exposes us to new music that has captivated his heart. Jacquelyn Buchanan, our Culinary Queen Bee, has a penchant for trying distinct regional food. And John Calmeyer, our fearless leader in all things creative as head of Marketing and Sales, shares his birthday with those celebrating Cinco de Mayo.
Established to commemorate the Mexican army’s victory over the French forces of Napoleon III in 1862 at the Battle of Puebla, the surprising win bolstered the resistance movement sweeping Mexico at the time. In the United States today, the day has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture, heritage, and delicious cuisine (plus a margarita or two!)
If you’re interested in experimenting with authentic Mexican cooking, we suggest the Doña Tomás cookbook by Thomas Schnetz and Dona Savitsky. Their famed Oakland restaurant has been treating loyal patrons for years. If you want to try a few dishes firsthand, definitely check out their spot in the Temescal district.
Colibri Mexican Bistro is another favorite SF hangout of ours. The owners, Eduardo and Sylvia Rallo, are from Cuernavaca and their menu is a delightful blend of Central Mexican dishes with influence from ancient Aztec and Mayan foods prepared with fresh California ingredients. Try their Chilaquiles on a relaxing weekend brunch.
Closer to home, our Jalapeño olive oil is a nice add to your homemade (or store bought fresh) salsa. It also goes amazingly well with anything that has to do with corn – grilled on the cob, popped, chopped in salad. It’s also delicious drizzled on tacos or grilled vegetables. Make your own mole with this easy recipe from Epicurious and top enchiladas or add flavor to chicken.
Pick your music wisely with a selection of contemporary Mexican musicians from The Culture Trip or pull out a classic Santana LP. Check out your local guide to attend a parade and join in the diversity of America’s great melting pot.
