2018 is the third vintage of Montepulciano that we bottled separately. As with all our wines, we take a hands-off approach to the vinification.
Mild weather early in the season led to a generous crop—we had twice as much Montepulciano in 2018 as we did in 2017. Very little water stress throughout the season kept the vines fresh and active even late into the fall. Montepulciano at our estate is a late ripener, it is often the last block we pick. In a cool-season like 2018, it can be a bit of a stretch getting this variety ripe, but the upside is that the alcohol is modest and the flavors are fresh.
Il Poggio Montepulciano never disappoints. At McEvoy Ranch, the staff waits eagerly for its release, when available, each year. May we recommend you grab a bottle, or two, before it's gone?
