Why McEvoy Ranch Put Olive Oil in Striped Tins

This spring, McEvoy Ranch introduced a new look and a new format: the Stripes Olive Oil Collection, our certified organic olive oil in a vibrant, design-forward 200ml tin. The change is more than cosmetic. It reflects how we believe good olive oil should be experienced, which is openly, often, and while it is fresh. Here is the thinking behind the Stripes Olive Oil Collection™, what it does for the olive oil, and why we think it is a better way to keep great olive oil in daily use.

Shop Our Olive Oil

The short version: a tin protects extra virgin olive oil better than clear glass because it blocks light and air, and it is lighter and harder to break. The stripes are our design signature; the tin is a practical decision about freshness and everyday use.

The Olive Oil Came First

Every decision started with the olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil is a fresh ingredient, essentially fresh juice from the fruit, and it is sensitive to oxygen, light, and heat. A clear glass bottle, however handsome, lets in the light that dulls flavor fastest. A tin gives the olive oil an opaque shell, so it shields the olive oil from light entirely. Each Stripes tin helps protect the olive oil from light and air, which preserves the fresh, lively character of our estate-grown olive oil from the first pour to the last.

That protection is the foundation. The striped design sits on top of a genuinely functional choice about keeping olive oil fresh, not the other way around.

Inside Every Tin: Estate-Grown California Olive Oil

An everyday tin is only as good as what is in it. Ours begins in the grove: estate-grown olive trees on our ranch in Petaluma, California, planted with traditional Italian (Tuscan) olive varieties, the same Mediterranean cultivars, Frantoio, Leccino, Pendolino, Moraiolo, Maurino, Coratina, and Leccio del Corno, grown here in our California region rather than imported. We pick at an early harvest, then crush and mill the fruit soon after and extract the olive oil with care, which is what gives our signature extra virgin its grassy, artichoke-forward, gently peppery taste, fruity and balanced rather than harsh.

As an olive oil producer, the source and care are the point: high-quality, award-winning, certified organic olive oil, made to a real organic certification standard. Depending on the bottling, our olive oils range from mild and buttery to more robust and peppery, but all of them are estate-produced and built on ripe, well-handled fruit. The tin simply preserves that work.

Lighter, Sturdier, and Made to Be Used

We also wanted olive oil you would actually reach for, not a precious bottle saved for special occasions. A tin earns its place on the counter and in the bag because it is:

  • Shatterproof and lightweight, so it is easy to keep within reach, hand a child to drizzle, or take outdoors without worrying about glass. (A tin can dent, but that is cosmetic.)
  • Easy to pour, designed for a clean, controlled pour straight from the tin, with no drips. Because it pours so neatly, many people use the tin to refill a small cruet on the table.
  • Portable and shippable, so a 200ml tin (about 6.8 fl oz) travels happily to a picnic, a rental kitchen, or a friend's table, and ships without the weight or fragility of glass.
  • Right-sized for freshness, since a smaller everyday container encourages you to finish it while it is at its best, then open the next.

The result is a modern, portable vessel for everyday use, from kitchen counters to outdoor dining and travel, that keeps premium olive oil feeling useful rather than untouchable.

About the Stripes

The stripes are our visual signature for this collection, a cheerful, design-forward system that ties the olive oils together as a family and reflects the California table-and-pantry spirit we love: bright, generous, and made for sharing. The striped tin is meant to be left out and enjoyed, a small piece of color in a working kitchen.

Each flavor wears its own stripe color, so the collection reads at a glance, and the olive oil tins look wonderful lined up together: navy for Extra Virgin, yellow for Lemon, green for Basil, light green for Rosemary, brilliant blue for Garlic, salmon for Jalapeño, and pink for Chili Lime. The look extends to our gift sets, too: the Stripes Olive Oil Trio™ comes in a keepsake box finished with a satin ribbon and a striped note card, with a design inspired by classic British florals and timeless striped tailoring (available September 2026).

What Is Inside the Striped Tins

The Stripes Olive Oil Collection™ brings together seven certified organic, estate-grown olive oils, each in a 200ml tin and made at our ranch in Petaluma, California:

  • Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, our signature estate blend. Gold at the 2026 California State Fair Olive Oil Competition.
  • Organic Lemon Olive Oil, bright and crisp. Gold at the 2026 California State Fair.
  • Organic Rosemary Olive Oil, intensely herbaceous. Best of Class at the 2026 California State Fair.
  • Organic Basil Olive Oil, fresh and green; a natural with tomato.
  • Organic Garlic Olive Oil, savory and aromatic.
  • Organic Jalapeño Olive Oil, with balanced green pepper heat. Best of Class at the 2026 California State Fair.
  • Organic Chili Lime Olive Oil, citrus-bright with a warm finish. A 2026 Good Food Awards winner.

The flavored olive oils are made using the Agrumato Method, co-milling the olives together with fresh herbs, citrus, or chilies so the flavor is part of the olive oil itself rather than added afterward. Every olive oil in the collection comes in the same 200ml extra virgin olive oil tin format.

How to Cook With the Stripes Tins

Because the tin is made to be used, put it to work. Reach for the Extra Virgin as your everyday cook's olive oil: roast vegetables, sauté and pan-cook, whisk a quick salad dressing, or finish a dish with a peppery drizzle. The flavored tins are an easy shortcut to a better recipe, Basil stirred into tomato sauce, Garlic over greens, Lemon on fish, Rosemary on potatoes, Chili Lime on grilled corn. Extra virgin olive oil performs well at normal kitchen temperatures for sautéing and roasting; for very high-heat frying, smoke point matters, but for most everyday cooking the Stripes Olive Oil Collection™ is exactly the olive oil you want within reach.

Premium Olive Oil, Made for Real Life

Putting our olive oil in a striped tin reflects how we think McEvoy Ranch olive oil should be experienced: estate-grown and award-winning, yes, but also open on the counter, drizzled over weeknight vegetables, and tucked into a travel bag. Exceptional California olive oil and thoughtful design, in a format built to be used, is the whole idea behind the tin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is McEvoy Ranch olive oil in a tin now?

Because a tin protects the olive oil from light and air better than clear glass, and it is lighter and harder to break. That keeps premium extra virgin olive oil fresher and easier to use every day.

Does the tin keep olive oil fresher than a bottle?

An opaque tin blocks light completely, which gives it an edge over clear glass. Good storage habits, a cool, dark cabinet away from heat, still matter to store olive oil well in any container.

What flavors and sizes do the Stripes tins come in?

A single 200ml tin size across seven certified organic olive oils: Extra Virgin, Lemon, Rosemary, Basil, Garlic, Jalapeño, and Chili Lime. Each flavor has its own stripe color.

Where does the olive oil come from?

Our own estate: olive trees grown, harvested, and milled at McEvoy Ranch in Petaluma, California, using traditional Italian (Tuscan) varieties grown in our California region. It is certified organic and estate-produced.

Is there a Stripes gift set?

Yes, available in September 2026. The Stripes Olive Oil Trio™ pairs three 200ml tins in a keepsake box finished with a satin ribbon and a striped note card, designed for easy, beautiful gifting.
