An olive oil sampler is a set of small-format olive oils meant to be opened together rather than one at a time: usually three to eight tins or bottles, each a different style, sized so one household can taste across the whole set while every one of them is still fresh. That last part is the whole idea. A sampler is not a discount mechanism and it is not a basket of miniatures. It is a way to give someone range, and a reason to use it before the range goes stale.
New for the 2026 holiday season, ours is the Stripes Olive Oil Trio: three 200 ML tins of certified organic, estate-grown olive oil from our ranch in Petaluma, California, packed in a patterned keepsake box tied with a satin ribbon, with a striped note card for your message. Each box is $69.95. This guide covers what to look for in any olive oil sampler, what is inside the Trio, what the set costs against buying the same tins on their own, and how to assemble your own if none of the three boxes is quite right.
What is an olive oil sampler?
A sampler, sometimes sold as an olive oil tasting set, an olive oil variety pack, an olive oil flight, or an olive oil gift trio, is a curated group of olive oils in a smaller format than the producer's standard bottle. The formats vary: mini bottles at 100 ML, 200 ML tins, sometimes a balsamic vinegar alongside. What they share is the intent. You are meant to open all of them, put them side by side, and notice how different one olive oil is from the next.
This makes a sampler gift set a better choice than a single large bottle for most people, and for a specific reason. A 500 ML bottle of an unfamiliar olive oil is a commitment: if the recipient does not love it, it sits. Three smaller units in three different flavors let someone find the one they reach for, and the smaller size means each of them is finished while it still tastes vivid. Olive oil is a fresh ingredient rather than something that improves with age, so a format the household will actually get through is doing real work, not just looking tidy.
An olive oil sampler set is distinct from a gourmet gift basket or a mixed gift box, which pairs olive oil with balsamic vinegar, tapenade, salt, or body care. Vinegar samplers, and mixed sets of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, are a category of their own again, and a good one for a bread-dipping household. All of them make a great gift. The sampler is the one to choose when the person already cooks and you want to widen what is on their counter rather than fill a shelf.
The test for a sampler is not how many bottles are in the box. It is whether the person opening it will have finished all of them by spring.
What to look for in an olive oil sampler
Most of what gets sold as a sampler is packaging around olive oil nobody asked about. Six things separate the sets worth giving.
| What to check | Why it matters | Where we land |
|---|---|---|
| Harvest date | Olive oil does not improve with age. A harvest date tells you when the fruit came off the tree; a best-by stamp only tells you when someone decided to stop guaranteeing it | Every Stripes tin carries the harvest year on the label |
| Who grew and milled it | Many gift sets are bottled by a company that never touched an olive. Estate-produced means the grower, the mill, and the label are the same operation | Grown, milled, and bottled at our ranch in Petaluma, California |
| Size per unit | Big enough to cook with, small enough to finish. 100 ML is a taste; 500 ML of a specialty olive oil is often too much for one household | 200 ML per tin, about 6.7 fl oz |
| The container | Light and air are what dull olive oil fastest. Clear glass looks generous and protects nothing | An opaque tin that blocks light, will not shatter, and pours without drips |
| Flavor range | Three near-identical olive oils are not a sampler. You want one everyday bottle and two that go somewhere the first one cannot | One extra virgin plus two co-milled flavors in every box |
| Presentation | If it is a gift, it has to arrive looking like one, without a second round of wrapping | A patterned keepsake box tied with a satin ribbon, plus a striped note card |
One label distinction is worth knowing before you compare sets. Most flavored olive oils sold in a variety pack are infused, meaning a flavoring is blended into finished olive oil after milling. Ours are co-milled: the lemons, herbs, or chilies go into the mill together with the olives, and the flavor is extracted alongside the olive oil. Citrus handled that way is called the Agrumato Method. Infused olive oils are not automatically worse, but co-milled olive oils tend to taste like the whole fruit rather than an essence, and it is a fair question to ask of any sampler before you buy it.
Why you will not see "cold-pressed" on our tins. It is the most common phrase on a sampler box and it is a holdover from another century. Modern mills do not press olive oil at all: the fruit is crushed and the olive oil is separated in a centrifuge under temperature control. We write milled and extracted because that is what happens. And when a box leans hard on "cold-pressed" but never prints a harvest date, the harvest date is the thing you were actually looking for.
The Stripes Olive Oil Trio: our new olive oil sampler set
The Stripes Olive Oil Trio comes in three boxed designs, each holding three 200 ML tins from the Stripes Olive Oil Collection. The boxes are $69.95 each. The design draws on classic British florals and timeless striped tailoring, which is a long way of saying the box is meant to be kept rather than recycled on the spot.
The three designs are Midnight Garden, First Bloom, and Morning Song.
Midnight Garden is the one we would send first. The box is deep navy, printed with cream florals on green stems, and inside are three tins that cover the range a cook actually uses: an everyday extra virgin olive oil, a bright citrus finishing olive oil, and an herb-milled olive oil for tomato season.
| Tin in Midnight Garden | Stripe color | What it tastes like | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stripes Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil | Navy and white | Grassy and artichoke-forward with a gentle peppery finish, fruity and balanced rather than harsh | The everyday cooking tin: roasting, sautéing, salad dressings, marinades, bread dipping |
| Stripes Organic Lemon Olive Oil | Yellow and white | Bright, crisp citrus, made with the Agrumato Method by milling whole organic lemons together with the olives | A drizzle over fish, roasted vegetables, or feta, and a lemon olive oil cake |
| Stripes Organic Basil Olive Oil | Green and white | Fresh aromatic basil against sweet green olive | Tomatoes, burrata, corn, summer pasta, minestrone |
That combination is why it is the easy recommendation. One tin does the daily work, and the other two send a familiar dish somewhere new without the recipient having to learn anything.

The Stripes Olive Oil Trio in Midnight Garden is the version of this set we would send first: Extra Virgin, Lemon, and Basil, three 200 ML tins of certified organic estate olive oil in a deep navy keepsake box.
Shop the Midnight Garden TrioFirst Bloom and Morning Song
First Bloom is the savory one. It keeps the Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil as its base and adds Garlic and Jalapeño. This is the box for the weeknight cook rather than the collector: garlic olive oil over white beans or roast potatoes, a little jalapeño olive oil on eggs or a bowl of soup, and the extra virgin for everything else. It is the trio most likely to be finished rather than admired.
Morning Song goes citrus, pairing Lemon and Chili Lime with the same extra virgin base. Give it to someone who cooks a lot of fish, shellfish, or vegetables, or who finishes a plate with a wedge of lime more often than a grind of pepper. Of the three it is the most summery, which makes it a good choice for a recipient who will still be using it in June.
All three boxes share the same base bottle, so the extra virgin is never the variable. What you are actually choosing between is a pair of finishing flavors: green and bright in Midnight Garden, savory and warm in First Bloom, citrus and sharp in Morning Song.
Shop the three boxes: Midnight Garden, First Bloom and Morning Song.
If you already have a specific flavor in mind for a specific person, building the set yourself from the individual tins is the surer route, and the section below covers how we would put one together.
What the Trio costs, and what it saves you
Worth checking the math, because gift sets are often sold on the implication of a bargain that is not there.
| How you buy it | Price |
|---|---|
| Stripes Olive Oil Trio, three 200 ML tins | $69.95 |
| The same three tins bought individually, at $28.95 each | $86.85 |
Here it is there. The set costs $16.90 less than the same three tins bought on their own.
You also get the part that is hard to do yourself: the tins arrive already boxed and ribboned, with a note card, in a design somebody thought about, ready to hand over or ship without a second layer of wrapping. If none of the three flavor combinations fits the cook you have in mind, buying three tins on their own still works. It just costs more and you do the wrapping.
Build your own olive oil sampler from the Stripes tins
Seven Stripes tins are available individually at $28.95 each, all certified organic and estate-produced, all in the same 200 ML tin. Any three of them make a sampler, and choosing them yourself means the set is aimed at one person rather than at a category. It is also the route to take if you want an olive oil gift set built entirely around heat, or around herbs, or around everyday cooking.
| Stripes tin | Stripe color | Where we reach for it |
|---|---|---|
| Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil | Navy and white | Everything. Start here, then build around it |
| Organic Lemon Olive Oil | Yellow and white | Fish, roasted vegetables, salads, baking |
| Organic Basil Olive Oil | Green and white | Tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, pasta, soups |
| Organic Garlic Olive Oil | Brilliant blue and white | Greens, beans, potatoes, garlic bread |
| Organic Rosemary Olive Oil | Light green and white | Roast chicken, winter squash, focaccia |
| Organic Chili Lime Olive Oil | Pink and white | Tacos, grilled corn, black beans, avocado toast |
| Organic Jalapeño Olive Oil | Salmon and white | Eggs, pizza, cornbread, sliced tomatoes |
Three combinations we come back to:
- For the home chef who cooks most nights: Extra Virgin, Garlic, Rosemary. Savory, useful in February, nothing that will sit unopened.
- For a hostess gift: Extra Virgin, Lemon, Basil. Bright, and every one of the three is good straight out of the tin onto bread or cheese.
- For someone who likes heat: Extra Virgin, Chili Lime, Jalapeño. The two flavored olive oils go on eggs and tacos, and the extra virgin keeps the set grounded.
If you would rather build a mini olive oil set from our 100 ML bottles, that lineup runs wider than the seven tins and includes Blood Orange and Herbes de Provence, neither of which comes in a Stripes tin yet.

Stripes Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the tin we would put in every sampler you build, because it is the one the recipient will actually finish.
Shop the Extra Virgin tinHow to give an olive oil sampler
A sampler works as a holiday gift, as a hostess gift you can hand over at the door, and as the thank-you you send when you want to give something the recipient will actually use. Three small things make the difference between one that gets used and one that gets shelved.
Say out loud that it is meant to be opened. People save gift olive oil. Tell the recipient to open all three, because the set is better as a working flight than as a display, and because olive oil is at its best sooner rather than later.
Point at one dish. A sampler is more useful with a suggestion attached. "Drizzle the basil one over tomatoes, the lemon one over fish" is a more generous gift than three tins and no instructions.
Give storage a thought. Heat, light, oxygen, and time are what dull olive oil, so a cupboard away from the stove is better than the windowsill. The tin handles the light problem on its own, which is a fair amount of the job already, but it does not like sitting next to a hot burner any more than glass does.
For anyone shopping wider than a sampler, our guide to olive oil gift sets for the holidays covers the larger boxes, the vinegar pairings, and the ODE body care sets.
Frequently asked questions about olive oil samplers
What is an olive oil sampler set?
An olive oil sampler set is a group of olive oils in a smaller-than-standard format, sold together so one household can taste across several styles while all of them are still fresh. Most run three to eight units, and you will see the same thing sold as an olive oil sampler pack or an olive oil variety pack. A good one pairs an everyday extra virgin olive oil with one or two specialty olive oils that go somewhere the first cannot, rather than three variations on the same thing.
How much is the Stripes Olive Oil Trio?
$69.95 for a box of three 200 ML tins. All three boxed designs, Midnight Garden, First Bloom, and Morning Song, are the same price.
Is an olive oil sampler cheaper than buying the bottles separately?
In our case, yes. Three Stripes tins bought individually come to $86.85; the Trio is $69.95, a saving of $16.90, and the box, ribbon and note card come with it. Check the math on any other set before assuming the same.
What olive oils are in the Midnight Garden trio?
Stripes Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Stripes Organic Lemon Olive Oil, and Stripes Organic Basil Olive Oil, each in a 200 ML tin, in a deep navy box printed with cream florals on green stems.
How long will the olive oil in a sampler stay fresh?
Check the harvest date on the label and choose the most recent one you can find. Unopened and stored somewhere cool and dark, a tin holds up well; once it is open, use it while it still tastes vivid rather than saving it. The 200 ML size is chosen partly for this reason, since it is an amount a household finishes rather than stores.
Can you give an olive oil sampler to someone who already has good olive oil?
That is the person it suits best. Someone who already keeps a bottle of extra virgin olive oil on the counter has the base covered and nowhere obvious to go next. An olive oil sampler gift adds range to a kitchen that is already using it, which makes it a better gift than a second bottle of what they buy anyway. It is close to the perfect gift for the cook who is hard to shop for, because it assumes they know what they are doing.
